Head lice and nits are parasites and they are somewhat difficult to eliminate. They usually make their appearance in the spring when it starts to get warm. Adult lice are particularly difficult to locate, but nits, or eggs, can usually be spotted behind the ears, at the back of the neck, and at the very top of the head.
Tea tree oil can be used topically to get rid of lice. Do not use pure, undiluted tea tree oil on infants or small children. It is extremely potent and could cause their delicate skin to become damaged or irritated. For use on anyone with sensitive skin, always dilute tea tree oil with olive oil and test on a small area of skin before proceeding. If irritation develops, discontinue use.
Lice are contagious. All bedding and towels must be washed and carpets must be cleaned and vacuumed thoroughly. Lice can live on surfaces apart from a host for two days and their eggs for at least seven days. It’s important to ensure that your environment has been cleared of lice and nits in order to prevent further infestation.
